What does The Spark Award fund?
Funding is intended to support UK-based inventors to develop products that will help people with arthritis to improve their quality of life and remain independent. This exciting new initiative aims to support the development of assistive products that help people living with arthritis to live well and for those products to offer additional therapeutic benefit, to help people be independent and in control as much as possible.
All of the products below started with a grant from us for £15,000 and went on to have a successful pitch granting them another grant from £25,000 to £40,000 to produce the product itself.
Handy Fasteners are magnetic fasteners which provide a simple alternative to buttons. They look like regular buttons and pull together without any effort. The Handy Fasteners team will even attach the buttons for you so all you need to do is send them your clothing to alter.
The Kikka Digger is a device which attaches to your spade or fork to add a levered footplate for quick and easy digging. It can help to reduce the strain normally involved in digging and the amount of bending needed. The inventor has kindly agreed to donate a percentage of sales to Arthritis Research UK.
The Nubbit is an accessory for tablets and e-readers. You can use it to grip your device or as a stand. It works for a large range of Kindle and iPad products.
The Ezi-plug design requires little precision or pressure to plug in and remove, making life easier for people who have arthritis in their hands.
