Strategic funding opportunities in 2018 and beyond

Published on 27 November 2017

Across the UK, more than 10 million people of all ages live with the pain and disability of arthritis and related musculoskeletal conditions, with a huge societal and personal impact. Arthritis Research UK has recently merged with Arthritis Care, and as a new and transformed charity we’re determined to change things and improve the quality of life for people living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. By 2020 our aim is to have made a positive and tangible change to the lives of people with arthritis so that they can be independent, informed and recognised.

Towards this goal, we continue to make a significant investment in research and in 2018 we’ll continue to support a portfolio of strategic challenge calls. We’re seeking to fund ambitious science in the areas of pain and cure, as well as research that will help make significant strides towards better management of musculoskeletal diseases and the delivery of health and social care excellence.

This will include the following strategic funding calls:

  • Two opportunities under the umbrella of Transforming musculoskeletal health, firstly our Pushing frontiers in health research challenge which will open 29 November 2017, with awards to be made in December 2018, and a following call (yet to be named) which will open in May 2018 with awards to be made May/June 2019
  • building on our last Cure challenge (biomedical research through to clinical) – opening May 2018 with awards to be made May/June 2019
  • our third Pain challenge – opening December 2018 with awards to be made December 2019.

Further details of these funding opportunities, as well as the timing of other funding calls including our portfolio of fellowships, will be announced on our website in due course.
