You decide to undertake some investigations:

Blood tests

  • Full blood count
  • Inflammatory markers – e.g. ESR, CRP, Plasma viscosity
  • Renal function
  • Liver function
  • Calcium and alkaline phosphatase
  • Thyroid function
  • Glucose
  • Protein electrophoresis
  • Creatinine kinase

Urine tests

  • Urine dip stick – e.g. glucose, blood, protein, nitrites
  • Bence Jones protein
