  • Regions are the 9 main regions in England: East Midlands, East of England, London, North East, North West, South East, South West, West Midlands & Yorkshire and the Humber.
    Until March 2012, these represented the highest level of sub-national government. They are now used for statistical purposes.
  • Local authorities (LAs) are 326 areas of local government.
  • Middle super output areas (MSOAs), for example 'Westminster 001', were defined by the Office of National Statistics in 2004 and have been used since 'to improve the reporting of small area statistics'. There are 6,791 MSOAs in England.
