Our pain centre is the world’s first national centre for research into understanding pain in arthritis. The centre brings together expert doctors and scientists in an ambitious bid to investigate the mechanisms of pain and improve treatments for arthritis.
The centre has already made great progress in key areas. Now researchers are focusing on finding new painkillers and different ways to stop the pain of arthritis increasing over time – all of it with your pain in mind.
Your gift could bring these treatments closer. Could this be the key to a new treatment for arthritis?
Dr Lucy Donaldson is investigating an extraordinary family of molecules – VEGF – that could provide a unique treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
VEGF-a is known to cause many of the harmful effects of inflammation, including pain – but another member of the family, VEGF-b, may be able to block these bad effects.
Existing treatments cannot tell the two molecules apart, so when they stop the ‘bad’ molecule, they stop the ‘good’ one too.
If Dr Donaldson’s work can find a way to block the effects of VEGF-a, while keeping the beneficial effects of VEGF-b, this could both slow down rheumatoid arthritis and treat its symptoms.
Will you give a gift to help us to say yes to more projects like this? You’ve helped us do so much
Since our charity began 80 years ago,we've made important discoveries that have changed life for people with arthritis.
New understanding of the way pain works – and how it can be reduced.
New treatments such as anti-TNF drugs, which have helped ease thousands of people’s pain.
New hope through working at the cutting edge of research, to keep on discovering more. Give a gift to pave the way for more important discoveries that can change the lives of people with arthritis. Back to Help to take away Cara's pain
