Our Centres of Excellence
In line with Arthritis Research UK’s progressive
approach to beating arthritis, we are creating Centres of
Excellence in strategic areas of arthritis research.
Driven by our Research Strategy meetings these Centres bring
together the experts and resources needed to target particular
arthritis research topics that will deliver significant national
benefit.
Arthritis Research UK’s Centre of Excellence funding boosts
existing resources by creating the additional, sustainable research
capacity and opportunities needed to develop clinically useful
outcomes.
Each Centre of Excellence receives up to a total of £2,500,000
over five years.
Arthritis Research UK’s Centres of Excellence are based in
research groups who already have a strong focus on a particular
area of research. Institutional support is a requirement for the
award of such funding.
The award of a Centre is for a fixed period of 5 years during
which time it is expected that the award will lead to substantial
success in gaining additional grant funding from other sources
(including Arthritis Research UK).
Centre renewal will depend upon progress, future proposals and
Arthritis Research UK funding strategy at the time.

Current Centre of Excellence Calls - Collaborative Centre in
Tissue Engineering
Arthritis Research UK proposes to establish a Collaborative
Centre in Tissue Engineering which will become an international
Centre of Excellence in research into the application of tissue
engineering technologies to the development of interventions
appropriate for the prevention or improvement of
osteoarthritis.
The Arthritis Research UK Centre of Excellence in Tissue
Engineering is based on stimulating the bringing together of
scientists and clinical investigators in the field who would
otherwise be working in isolation. Such a Centre is likely to
encompass recognised scientists from more than one institution but
which would have a strong central direction.
Applications have been received in response to this call and we
are currently progressing these through peer review, assessment and
adjudication in anticipation of making an award in summer 2010.
