Industrial support of grants
Arthritis Research UK welcomes industrial support in relation to
research and educational funding applications provided it is
directed towards our strategic goals and that is based on
a genuine research collaboration with the industrial partner or an
independent untied donation.
In accepting industrial support, Arthritis Research UK requires
the disclosure of and details from the collaboration of recent,
current and planned links between individual applicants and
industry.
This ensures that integrity and freedom, of both the researcher
and Arthritis Research UK as an independent charity, are
maintained. The onus is on the applicant to maintain complete
openness.
This
policy does not deal with conflicts of interest pertaining to
peer review and committee membership. It is not the intention of
Arthritis Research UK to monitor all conflicts of interest.
Thus it is not a requirement for applicants to routinely supply
information regarding conflicts of interest with every
application.
In part, this document reflects the policies expressed from
the
‘Association of Medical Research Charities’ (AMRC)
discussion document: ‘An Essential Partnership-Principles and
Guidelines for Working with Industry’ (AMRC, June
2007).
The need for Arthritis Research UK to have its own policy has
been brought to the forefront by Arthritis Research UK’s revised
approach to Clinical Studies support. This strategy has been
closely linked into the ‘National Institute for Health Research’
(NIHR) support
sector for ‘Clinical Research Networks’. This in turn envisages a
strong and mutually beneficial relationship with the industry’s
development and testing of novel interventions.

considers research and educational funding applications in
relation to industrial support (including collaborations and
donations).
