Prevent, Transform, Cure – the Arthritis Research UK manifesto

'We need to work in partnership to put the needs of people with arthritis on the political agenda and transform lives.'

Dr Liam O’Toole, chief executive officer of Arthritis Research UK

Musculoskeletal conditions can have a huge impact on people’s lives. They may not take life, but for many they take away the quality of life. This is particularly true for the many people living with constant and sometimes unbearable pain.

Prevent, Transform, Cure – the Arthritis Research UK manifesto (PDF 967 KB) calls for decision makers to put in place policies that will lead to the prevention and cure of musculoskeletal conditions while transforming the service provided to those that live with them.

The manifesto calls for politicians to take action by:

  • preventing the development of musculoskeletal conditions through a ground-breaking public health approach to musculoskeletal health throughout the life course
  • transforming lives through more integrated, person-centred care, tackling the existing bias towards drug-based treatments over other treatments that are more likely to help
  • supporting the UK research community as it conducts ground-breaking research with the ultimate goal of finding a cure for musculoskeletal conditions.

To deliver this ambitious agenda we’re asking members of parliament to become Arthritis Champions, fighting on behalf of those with musculoskeletal conditions.

How can MPs get involved?

  • Issue our template press release championing your support for our manifesto. Download the template press release (DOC 75 KB).
  • Check whether your local authority has included musculoskeletal conditions in their joint strategic needs assessment. If they have not, write to them and ask them why, using the template letter. Download the template letter to Local Authorities (DOC 75 KB).
  • Ask your local Overview and Scrutiny Committee to conduct an investigation into musculoskeletal services locally.
