Arthritis Research UK welcomes Rodger McMillan as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees

Published on 02 March 2017

Dr Rodger McMillanArthritis Research UK is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Chair, Rodger McMillan. At the same time, we say a fond farewell to Charles Maisey.

Rodger, who has been a member of the Board for the past three years, was selected after a rigorous, externally-led selection process. As a scientist, and later as a Senior Vice President of Research and Development at AstraZeneca, Rodger brings his extensive experience in life sciences and healthcare to this role.

He spent his distinguished 30-year career in the pharmaceutical industry involved in the discovery and development of new medicines in rheumatology and other inflammatory diseases. This required a deep understanding of the unmet medical needs of patients.

Charles MaiseyRodger succeeds Charles Maisey, who has successfully led the Board of Trustees over the last 10 years. During this time, the charity has developed a strategy rooted in the experiences and needs of people with arthritis.

As a result, we've launched research calls focussed on finding a cure, challenged the research community to address the complex issue of pain and opened 13 key research Centres of Excellence.

Charles has also supported the development of our Patient Insight Partners group, which has enabled us to incorporate the perspective of people living with arthritis in to decisions about our research priorities. In addition to our research commitments, we have invested in developing our information and support services and welcomed Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall as our Patron.

Commenting on his departure, Charles said, "It's been an absolute privilege to serve the Board of Trustees and see the charity go from strength to strength over the last 10 years. I'm immensely proud to have put people with arthritis at the heart of everything we do.

"I'm confident that Rodger will continue to lead the Board in overseeing the implementation of our strategy to help more people with arthritis feel they are in control, independent and recognised.""It's been an absolute privilege to serve the Board of Trustees and see the charity go from strength to strength."Charles Maisey, departing Chair of Trustees

Rodger adds, “I'm extremely honoured to be taking on the role of Chair for this wonderful charity. When I chose to retire, my goal was to give something back to support healthcare and life science activities in the UK. I'll be building on Charles’s legacy to ensure that the charity continues to invest in breakthrough treatments, the best information and vital support for everyone affected by arthritis.”

The Chair plays a vital role ensuring that the Board of Trustees drive the charity’s strategic direction and meets their regulatory obligations.

Our Chief Executive Officer, Liam O’Toole, comments, "I've thoroughly enjoyed and valued working with Charles. His dedication, expertise and passion over the years has been instrumental in helping us get closer to our goal – improving the quality of life for people with arthritis.

"I’m delighted that Rodger is taking on this important role. He'll help us to continue building on our success and help more people push back the ways arthritis limits their lives."
