How do I join Team A?

Apply for a guaranteed charity place

Guaranteed charity place applications for 2018's London Marathon are now open! To apply, simply complete our online application form here.

In here we will ask you about your reason for wanting to support Arthritis Research UK, how you intend to hit that fundraising target of £2,000 by providing us with a plan of your activities and how much you think they will raise, as well as information about your previous running experience.

Please provide us with as much information as possible as this will help the strength of your application. Please note that the £50 registration fee is not payable until confirmation of successfully securing one of our guaranteed charity places.

We receive a high volume of applications for a very limited number of places, please bear with us why we work through all applications but we aim to let you know the outcome within a couple of months.

I would like to enter the public ballot

The public ballot for the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon will open on Monday 1st May 2017 and close at 5pm on Friday 5th May 2017. When entering the ballot make sure you select Arthritis Research UK as the charity you would like to run for in the 2018 London Marathon and we will keep you up to date with all information you will need.

The public ballot is due to be announced late September 2017 or early October 2017.

What do I get?

All our Team A runners receive:

  • an official welcome pack, including our Guide to Fundraising with tips and advice to help raise vital funds for Arthritis Research UK, sponsorship forms and posters to help promote your fundraising
  • top training, nutritional and health advice to make sure you’re ready for the big day
  • an official Arthritis Research UK orange running vest to wear on the big day with letters to spell out your name
  • support from the Arthritis Research UK events team before, during and after your challenge
  • an invitation to our post-race party to celebrate your success with friends and family
  • dedicated Team A cheer points on the day around the route
  • access to our Team A Closed Facebook Community where you can chat to follow Team A members about training tips and fundraising ideas


What else do I need to know?

We receive a high volume of applications for our London Marathon places. Please do bear with us whilst we process all applications. You will receive a phone call or email from the events team letting you know the outcome of your application.  If you successfully secure a guaranteed charity place with Arthritis Research UK you will have a £50 registration fee and a minimum sponsorship target of £2,000.

The public ballot for the 2018 London Marathon will open on the 1 May 2017 at 9am and close on the 5 May at 5pm.  The ballot will be announced around the beginning of October 2017.  

You must:

  • be 18 years old to take part in this event
  • pick up your race number from the London Marathon exhibition from Wednesday 18 April 2018 – Saturday 21 April 2018. Failure to do so will result in you not being able to take part on the day

If you are an own place runner:

  • pay your registration fee directly with the organisers by cut-off date provided by them
  • you will have no minimum sponsorship target, you can raise as much as possible
  • you will receive the same support from the events team as all of our runners do
  • all sponsorship raised must be into Arthritis Research UK by the 22 June 2018

If you are a guaranteed charity runner: 

  • you must pay your £50 registration fee within 7 days of the place being offered
  • your minimum sponsorship target deadline is the 22 June 2018
  • you cannot transfer your place to another participant if you are unable to take part
