Ultrasound: 1st MTP injection

Real-time dorsal longitudinal view of injection of the 1st metatarsophalanageal (MTP) joint. The hypoechoic area of synovitis and effusion is bounded by the MTP joint below (hyperechoic white lines) and the extensor tendon above (thin linear structure). The needle approaches transversely and the tip is seen as a bright white spot (with comet tail artefact) entering the centre of the synovitis. Hyperechoic steroid admixture is observed circulating freely in the joint during the injection.
