Feet and footwear for ankylosing spondylitis (AS)

People with ankylosing spondylitis are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis, a condition that causes pain in the arch and heel of the foot. If your heels or feet are affected by ankylosing spondylitis (AS), you may benefit from custom-made insoles (orthotics). These may also help with the alignment of your lower limbs and therefore relieve pain in the hips, pelvis or lower back. A podiatrist can assess and advise you on this.

Sorbothane insoles or gel heel cushions may be enough to ease discomfort as they provide padding. These can be found in your local chemist or sports shop.
