Goal 10 - Build a world class workforce to continue the fight against arthritis.

Build a world class workforce to continue the fight against arthritis

Our objective

Enough expert scientists and healthcare professionals together with the necessary investment and infrastructure will be in place to continue the fight against arthritis for the foreseeable future.

How we will measure progress

We have set up a strategy committee whose remit is to monitor recruitment and retention of the workforce needed to achieve our goals.

Where we are now

We are the major funder in the UK of clinical and non-clinical scientists and educators in relation to arthritis.  We work with universities and the NHS to ensure that all groups are covered including general practitioners, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists and similar professionals.  We also have a whole career approach for all these groups from graduation to a senior career post. Recruitment and retention are increasingly problematic as the career structure in UK for researchers is precarious. Many individuals are lured overseas and by industry in the UK and overseas, and in many disciplines such as orthopaedics the demands of the clinical training preclude development of research and education interest to the level required.

What we will be doing

  • Supporting a broad portfolio of opportunities for all the key professional groups to maximise the attraction of working in arthritis and being involved in research and education as major career goals
  • Conducting a programme of activities aimed at improving understanding of arthritis in healthcare professionals
