Goal 1 - Raise awareness and understanding of arthritis and the leading role Arthritis Research UK plays in the battle against it.
Raise awareness and understanding of arthritis and the leading role Arthritis Research UK plays in the battle against it.
At least half of the UK’s population will be aware of the pain and disability associated with arthritis and will know how to reduce their risk of developing it. Awareness and understanding of arthritis will increase.
How we’ll measure progress
We will use our own surveys as well as identify work done by other organisations to monitor population understanding and knowledge.
Where we are now
Despite the widespread occurrence of arthritis, there continues to be widespread ignorance of the impact of the disease on the lives of sufferers. The vast majority of people believe that arthritis is a necessary consequence of ageing for which little can be done and that symptoms are not particularly severe. Knowledge of risk factors, even where there is overwhelming evidence such as that from obesity for osteoarthritis, is minimal and does not lead to behavioural change.
What we will be doing
- Actively promoting understanding of all forms of arthritis, its complications and the symptoms it causes
- Producing and promoting materials designed for the public in various formats including: Printed patient leaflets, online information and authoritative report
- Conducting a programme of activities aimed at improving understanding of arthritis by healthcare professionals
- Continuing to be the authoritative source of up to date data on all aspect of the occurrence of arthritis and related disorders, presenting these in an accessible way on our website and, when appropriate, highlighting the material in specific activities and campaigns.
